Pugh Residence
This was a very interesting landscape design project. It had its challenges because of all the shade and the roots from trees in the front yard as well as in the fenced patio area. The other challenge was that we installed it during two week-long heavy rain periods. Thank goodness for the sod or the whole job would have rushed down the street. There was more than one day that we went home soaked to the bone!!
I used a combination of Burford Hollies, Camellia, Agapanthus, Variegated Ginger and Encore Azaleas in the front as well as Asiatic Jasmine, Liriope and Aztec Grass. We built a small berm that went along the side of the Laurel Oak and were careful not to cover up air roots from the tree. We had planned on using as a backdrop a Viburnum hedge along the left side of the house but when we trimmed it out, we found that half the the giant plants were dead. After those were pulled out, we replaced the hedge with Podocarpus and anchored it with a Crepe Myrtle in the only sunny area in the entire front.
The fenced in patio area on the side had been used as a dog run area and never utilized as a patio. We installed a low wall around the trees and a large paver patio. In the beds along the newly stained fence, we put in clump Bamboo and dwarf podocarpus and Apostle’s Iris. Within the wall, we put in a Cat Palm and Mrs. Iceton Croton, Flax lilies and a flower garden.
We filled some hayracks that were installed along the fence with Begonias, Caladiums, Coleus and money plant.
The overall affect has been amazing and the clients are using their patio every day with cookouts and entertaining!
